A Nigerian woman who persisted through years of hard work has been able to cater for her family and train her children through the sale of roasted yam.
In an interview with Daily Trust Saturday, the woman popularly known as Mama Joy who has been in the business of roasting yam for 30 years shared her motivation.
She spoke of her husband who works very hard, but as a vulcanizer, could not earn enough to cater for the needs of their big family.
In a bid to assist, she started hawking a local beverage known in Hausa as “Kunun Dawa”.
The stress of hawking took a toll on her health and there was only little gain, so she sought for another line of business.
In the course of inquiring, a friend suggested that she should roast yams and she bought the idea.
She got some yams on credit and searched for a location where she thought roasted yam would be needed, and she hit a space at Rwang Pam street Jos.
Diligently, she got some yams on credit and paid for them at the time she agreed with the supplier. That earned her the trust of her supplier so she was able to get more yams on credit.
Hard Work pays
“I never ran into a loss roasting yam. In fact, my children eat from it and I still make gains at the end of the day.” She told Daily Trust.
Mama Joy was one of the first people in Jos to start this line of business and this gave her monopoly in that area.
Despite not having any formal training in business, she was able to grow her business by providing the things her customers demanded for.
Soon, she added soft drinks, roasted plantain, and fish to the business. Because of this, her clientele grew.
Within a period of 30 years she has used the proceeds to train her nine children through primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.
