Aisha Buhari: Facts, controversies, and student’s arrest

By Oluwatosin Ajayi

It is alleged that the first lady, Aisha Buhari ordered the arrest and joined in beating a 23-year-old Nigerian student, Aminu Mohammed from the Federal University Dutse after tweeting about her.

The final year student of environmental management technology and toxicology tweeted in Hausa, “Su mama anchi kudin talakawa ankoshi,” meaning “the mother has got fatter by eating masses’ money.” This tweet did not sit well with the first lady as she ordered the DSS to arrest Aminu.

Concerned Nigerians have reacted to the arrest, describing it as unnecessary and sheer power drunkenness. Mr Macaroni tweeted, “Madam First Lady, you are not God!!! If you have any grievance whatsoever, go to court!!! You are not bigger than the Citizens of Nigeria neither are you bigger than the Law!! You should use your power to serve the people not oppress them!! Free Aminu!!!”

Rinu Oduala wrote, “APC has turned Nigeria into a dictatorship where citizens are arrested for criticizing the First Lady. Aminu Mohammed must be released immediately!
If Aisha Buhari was defamed, she should go to court, not resort to using state institutions
to perpetuate brutality! #FreeAminu.”
