After ‘Anikulapo’, Kunle Afolayan Set to Release ‘Ijogbon’, a Movie About Teenager’s Love for Japa

Nigerian Film maker Kunle Afolayan is set to release another motion picture titled ‘Ijogbon’ set in a village in South Western Nigeria.


The coming of age film was written by Tunde Babalola, Ijogbon revolves around four rural teenagers in south-western Nigeria who find a bag filled with diamonds. Their undoing comes when they conceal the treasure.

Ijogbon has a rich cast that includes Bimbo Manuel, Gabriel Afolayan, Sam Dede, Tana Adelana, Yemi Solade, Yemi Sodimu, Femi Branch, and Adunni Ade.

Kunle Afolayan said the movie touches on the salient aspect of a Nigerian experience, “shows the universality of human emotions, defined by peculiar cultural backgrounds and beliefs,” he said.

Furthermore, the film depicts what life is like for teenagers in rural parts, and their aspirations for a better life, even if it means having to Japa (leaving the country),” he added.

Afolayan entered into a three-film contract with Netflix in 2021. ‘Swallow’ and ‘Anikulapo’ are among the three movies which have already been released. The remaining movie which will explore dementia alongside African spirituality is yet to be released.

Tunde Babalola, the film’s writer, has worked with the popular film producer on a number of other projects such as ‘Mokalik’, ‘Citation’ and’ TheCEO’.
