Nigeria’s quest for an 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title has begun with an unexpected setback after the Super Falcons suffered a 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening Group C match.
Going into the game, the Super Falcons were overwhelming favourites. As Africa’s most successful women’s national team and defending champions, many expected Nigeria to begin their campaign with a convincing win against a Malawi side making its first appearance at the continental tournament.
Instead, football reminded everyone why it remains one of the world’s most unpredictable sports.
For much of the contest, Nigeria struggled to convert possession into clear-cut chances, while Malawi stayed disciplined and waited patiently for opportunities to counterattack.
The breakthrough came in the second half when Malawi captain Temwa Chawinga found the back of the net before her sister, Tabitha Chawinga, doubled the advantage minutes later. Temwa completed her brace in stoppage time, putting the Scorchers firmly in control.
Nigeria mounted a late fightback through a penalty converted by Rasheedat Ajibade before Uchenna Kanu added another deep into added time. However, the comeback came too late as Malawi held on to record one of the biggest upsets in recent WAFCON history.
The result serves as an early warning for Coach Justine Madugu’s side.
Before the tournament, Nigeria entered Morocco aiming to defend the continental title and secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The opening defeat now increases the importance of every remaining group-stage fixture, leaving little room for further mistakes.
While the Super Falcons still have enough quality and experience to progress, they will need a much-improved performance in their next matches if they are to remain on course for an 11th African crown.
Women’s football continues to enjoy growing support across Lagos, including in Ikeja, where many fans gathered to watch Nigeria’s opening match.
The Super Falcons have long been one of the country’s most successful sporting teams, inspiring young girls to pursue football and giving Nigerians memorable moments on the continental and global stage.
Although the campaign has started on a disappointing note, one defeat does not end Nigeria’s hopes. The group stage still offers an opportunity for the Falcons to respond and prove why they remain one of Africa’s strongest women’s teams.
As the tournament continues, football fans across Ikeja will be hoping the nine-time… no, ten-time African champions can bounce back quickly and keep their title defence alive.
