The days of digging through your pockets for physical identity cards or printed boarding passes at domestic airport terminals are slowly coming to an end.

In a major bid to modernise passenger processing and tighten aviation security, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) recently announced the introduction of V-Pass, a new biometric verification system.

The initiative, unveiled by the Federal Government, is expected to streamline passenger movement through airports by allowing travelers to verify their identities using biometric data rather than presenting physical identification documents at multiple checkpoints.

Under the proposed system, passengers will have their identities linked to biometric profiles, enabling facial recognition cameras to verify their identities during check-in, security screening, and boarding. The move is expected to reduce processing time, shorten queues, and improve the overall travel experience.

Beyond convenience, the government says V-PASS is aimed at strengthening airport security by reducing cases of identity fraud and improving the accuracy of passenger records. It is also expected to support better data management and enhance transparency across airport operations.

The biometric system will initially be deployed at domestic airports across Nigeria, with plans to extend it to the private aviation sector in the future.

The agreement for the project was signed in April 2026, marking a significant step in the Federal Government’s push to modernise Nigeria’s aviation sector through digital technology.

FAAN has yet to announce a date for the full rollout of the system or release detailed guidelines on passenger enrolment or implementation procedures. The authority says further information on the operation of V-PASS, including timelines and enrolment processes, will be communicated to the public in due course.
