Empowering the Next Generation: Celebrating Youth Leadership and Innovation in Ikeja

By Bababunmi Agbebi

Across the globe, young people are at the forefront of driving meaningful change, from climate activism to digital innovation. In recognition of their growing impact, the United Nations established International Youth Day in 1999, not only to celebrate youth but to encourage action and amplify their role in shaping a better world.

This year’s celebration comes at a critical time, as many young people face challenges such as unemployment, social unrest, and economic uncertainty. Despite these obstacles, youths continue to rise, leveraging technology, social entrepreneurship, and grassroots movements to transform their communities.

In Nigeria, and particularly in vibrant hubs like Ikeja, youth-led initiatives are gaining remarkable traction. From digital skill acquisition programs and tech startups to creative arts and civic advocacy, young people in Ikeja are harnessing innovation to address gaps in education, healthcare, and governance. Initiatives focused on coding, digital marketing, and sustainable development are empowering a new generation to lead with purpose and vision.

In the tech space, Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, co-founder of Andela and Flutterwave, stands out as a visionary entrepreneur whose platforms have created global opportunities for African developers and revolutionized digital payments across the continent.

In the entertainment industry, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has become a global music sensation, earning Grammy nominations and working with international stars, all while proudly representing Lagos’ vibrant creative scene.

Whether in Lagos, London, Nairobi, or New York, one thing is clear: young people are not waiting for change they are creating it and owning it.

One message resonates strongly in Ikeja and beyond: Investing in youth is not just a necessity, it’s a pathway to sustainable development and national prosperity.

This is a call on government institutions, private sector leaders, civil society, and communities to invest intentionally in youth empowerment through quality education, skills development, access to technology, mentorship, and inclusive policies.

Support youth-led initiatives. Fund innovation. Create safe spaces for expression and leadership. When we equip young people with the tools they need to succeed, we build stronger communities and a more prosperous, stable nation.
