A Life in Power: From Military to Democracy
Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s former military head of state (1983–1985) and later president (2015–2023), has died at 82 in London, where he was receiving treatment for a prolonged illness.
Buhari first seized power through a coup in December 1983, establishing himself as a strict leader who launched the “War Against Indiscipline” before being overthrown in 1985. He then transitioned into democratic politics, persistently running for president in 2003, 2007, and 2011 before finally winning in 2015 under the APC banner — becoming the first opposition candidate to unseat an incumbent president.
Promises vs. Realities: A Divisive Presidency
Buhari rose to power on pledges to fight corruption and defeat Boko Haram. His tenure saw some progress — including freeing abducted Chibok girls and recovering public funds. However, Nigeria also experienced worsening insecurity, two economic recessions, and public backlash over his handling of the #EndSARS protests and internet restrictions.
Critics note frequent overseas medical trips, deepening poverty, and failing infrastructure as key blemishes on his record.

Final Moments and Official Tributes
Buhari passed away in London at around 4:30 PM local time, his death confirmed via spokesman Garba Shehu. President Tinubu described him as “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman,” ordering flags at half-mast and dispatching Vice President Shettima to London to oversee the repatriation.
Global figures like Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun also paid tribute, highlighting his service to Nigeria and beyond.
Legacy: A Mixed Inheritance
Buhari will be remembered for ushering in Nigeria’s first peaceful democratic transition with his 2015 victory and for his early anti-corruption fervor. But his legacy remains complex — mired in authoritarian leanings, economic hardship, and violent civil unrest.
