October 5th is International Teacher’s Day, a moment to reflect on the often understated role teachers play in shaping lives. Their influence runs deep, extending beyond the classroom. We spoke to a few individuals whose lives have been touched by these incredible mentors.
For Ifeoma Okonkwo, a resident of Opebi, her secondary school teacher was a turning point. “I wasn’t the brightest in Mathematics,” she recalls with a smile, “but Mr. Olaniyan never gave up on me. He would stay behind after school, patiently explaining every concept until it clicked.” Today, Ifeoma is an accountant, and she credits much of her success to those extra hours. “Without his belief in me, I don’t think I’d be where I am today.”
In Maryland, Segun Daramola, a business owner, remembers how his English teacher, Mrs. Aina, shaped his confidence. “She was the first person who told me I had a gift for storytelling. I was just writing essays like everyone else, but she saw something special. That’s what inspired me to start my own content creation business.” Segun’s work now focuses on sharing the stories of local businesses in Ikeja, a skill he developed under Mrs. Aina’s guidance.
For Esohe Akpata, it wasn’t just academic lessons she took from her teacher, but life lessons. Growing up in Alausa, Esohe faced challenges balancing school and home responsibilities. “My biology teacher, Miss Bamidele, was more like a mentor. She taught me discipline, how to prioritize, and how to stay focused even when life gets tough. She would always say, ‘Your dreams are valid, Esohe. Don’t give up on them.’ Those words have stayed with me.”
It is clear from these stories that teachers aren’t just educators—they’re mentors, counselors, and sometimes, a student’s greatest supporter. As we celebrate International Teacher’s Day, let’s take a moment to appreciate the impact of teachers on lives, both big and small. To every teacher out there: thank you for your patience, your wisdom, and your unwavering belief in the potential of every student.
Happy International Teacher’s Day!
