Presidency dismisses claims of Tinubu’s alleged plan to implant “Loyalists” as RECs

In a recent development, the Presidency has issued a statement urging Nigerians to dismiss speculations suggesting that President Bola Tinubu is seeking to appoint “loyalists” as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) with the aim of establishing a one-party state in the country.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, emphasized in the statement titled ‘PDP, Atiku Raising False Alarm’ that President Tinubu’s tenure as governor witnessed significant progress in various state initiatives, and his commitment to democracy and the rule of law has been acknowledged globally.

Onanuga clarified that the dominance of President Tinubu’s political structure in Lagos is attributed to his democratic principles and not to any undemocratic practices, as alleged by Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku raised concerns about the judiciary

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Atiku Abubakar’s spokesperson had raised concerns about the independence of the judiciary and made accusations against Tinubu in separate statements.

The statement further highlighted that the PDP, the former vice president, and his spokesperson have resorted to desperate measures by attempting to shift their challenges onto President Tinubu and the judiciary, a vital arm of the Nigerian government, following the unfavorable outcomes of certain party-elected governors at the appeals court.

Onanuga asserted that by deflecting blame, Atiku and his associates have failed to demonstrate any introspection before making baseless and reckless allegations.

The statement also pointed out instances where PDP governors secured victories in the courts, underscoring that the nullification of PDP gains by certain courts is a result of the party’s blatant disregard for the law.
