Civil society groups protest plans by Tinubu to sign pro-LGBTQ agreement with EU-ACP

Nigerian civil society organisations have urged Bola Tinubu not to sign a deal with the European Union that would decriminalise LGBTQ people in the country.

The European Union (EU) set aside, November 15, 2023, to persuade the African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) nations to sign an LGBTQ agreement with the EU.

Parliamentarians from the EU and the ACP have been meeting for a few months now in an attempt to persuade the ACP leaders to approve the contentious LGBT accord.

On November 28, 2022, the EU and ACP Ministers met in Brussels with the aim of putting more pressure on the ACP Ministers to get the ACP heads of government to sign the LGBT accord.

Nigeria says to No to LGBTQ agreement

A second gathering with the same goal was held in Brussels from June 19–28, 2023.

Nigerian civil society group members have now pleaded with Tinubu not to sign the deal since it goes against the principles that Nigerians hold dear.

Sonnie Ekwowusi, the Human Rights Committee Chairman, stated, “This cannot go because LGBT is illegal in Nigeria. There is what is called safe-sex provision act 2014, which was enacted during the government of Jonathan and that law is still there.

“Why should we now go ahead and sign a document that has to do with the promotion of LGBT? It is completely unacceptable and we should not sign. Nigeria should say ‘no’.”
