He had invited Anicet over to the Us with the plans of sponsoring everything but when he went to the Embassy, he was denied his visa after waiting for over 8 months.

On getting to the embassy, after paying the non refundable fee for the visa application and also practicing hard and long to get the pronunciations, all he was asked was “what is your purpose of visiting, What’s the nature of your job?”

After Anicet, the High school teacher whose main aim was to go for tourism over there gave them his answers, in about 2 minutes of being in the office, he was denied his visa.

Tim came to the conclusion that the US Embassy would only favor the rich, those with the right passport and the right skin color.

The Nightmares of being an African

Both Citizens of Nigeria and the US lamented about this as some had faced the exact same thing and called on the consular to do better at their jobs to avoid being given a bad title.

@NorbOdero:I found the US embassy to be a very scary place. It’s a place that can shatter someone soul completely. I am sorry for your friend. I hope he doesn’t lose hope and gets to visit you one day.”

@Jonathan Rosenthal: I’m so sorry for him. The system is absolutely rigged against Africans.”

@Tess Graham: Thank you for sharing this, Tim. Utterly infuriating + hypocritical. I had a similar wrenching experience trying to secure a visa for a former partner. 100s of dollars, many hours of prep, rejected in minutes b/c of the “wrong” passport. A travesty. I’m sorry for you and Anicet.”

@Alhaji Premium man: “Meanwhile most countries have moved this process to online…and even though there are still a few kinks there, the US, UK and Europe generally need to rethink their immigration policy in Africa. Especially collecting “non refundable” visa fees from people…it’s extortion.”
