Double tragedy for wife of late Flight Lieutenant Chinecherem Okoronkwo, one of the officers killed during bandits’ attack on Nigerian Defence Academy’s permanent facility in Kaduna State on Tuesday, as family source revealed that she was expecting her first child after four years of marriage.
While commiserating with the family, the National Director of Christ Ambassador Students Outreach (CASOR), Dr. Amaefule Emeka-Charles, who took to the fellowship’s Facebook page, to bemoan Okoronkwo’s fate said Flt Lt. Okoronkwo served as the General Secretary of CASOR at the University of Calabar during his degree days.
Before studying Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Nigeria and was Head of Department, Laboratory Services, Nigeria Defence Academy, Kaduna, till his death. It was gathered that personnel monitoring closed-circuit television (CCTV) at the academy were reportedly asleep, when the unknown gunmen attacked the premises.
In a statement, Spokesperson of the academy, Bashir Muhd Jajira, spokesperson revealed that security architecture of the institution was compromised, which allowed the bandits to gain access to the well-fortified institution.
A source said bandits gained entrance to the premises through a spot that has no fence. “It was in the middle of the night, and the personnel that were meant to be monitoring the CCTV had slept off. They could have put everyone on alert and avert the attack.”
He added that the gunmen operated for hours with no resistance from personnel while soldiers made effort to trail them after the raid.
