Chicago State University (CSU) has officially confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attended the institution and graduated in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree.
The university issued this statement in response to recent controversies surrounding Tinubu’s educational background.
While confirming Tinubu’s attendance and graduation, CSU emphasized that federal law, specifically the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), restricts them from disclosing further information about his records without consent or a court order.

The issue was raised by Atiku
The controversy over Tinubu’s academic records arose when former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar questioned the authenticity of documents suggesting Tinubu’s graduation from CSU in 1979.
Atiku had argued that submitting false records to the National Election Commission should nullify Tinubu’s election victory.
In response, Atiku’s lawyers had requested CSU officials to provide Tinubu’s academic documents and participate in depositions during a hearing in Chicago.
However, Judge Jeffrey Gilbert of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois did not make a ruling on the request.
CSU’s attorney, Michael Hayes, informed the court that the university could not certify Tinubu’s diploma under oath.
The university clarified that while they can confirm Tinubu’s graduation, the diploma is considered ceremonial and not part of an official academic file.

Meanwhile, Chicago State University (CSU) has indicated that they are willing to release the academic records of President Bola Tinubu if a United States court grants the order.
The move comes after Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), sought a court order compelling CSU to release Tinubu’s academic records.
Tinubu’s credentials indicate that he graduated from CSU in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, and management.
