PSG player, Jean-Pierre Adam died thirty nine years after going into coma following a routine knee operation.

He went into coma at age 34 and slept for 39 years before his death today.

The former France international footballer was admitted to the Édouard Herriot Hospital in Lyon on 17 March 1982, following a ligament rupture injury at age 34.

After an error made by his anaesthetist, he suffered a bronchospasm which starved his brain of oxygen and made him slip into a coma.

The anaesthetic that was administered to him was just to make him sleep for some hours but he slept for 39 years.

However, a court of law adjudicated on the case, and one-month suspension sentences and fines translated to $815 was given to the anaesthetist and trainee who worked on him.

Bernadette who looked after her husband for almost four decades told CNN that “It is difficult because I am no longer young. He will die without being looked after. If I don’t do it, who will? Jean-Pierre was someone very appealing and deserved help. He is still alive and that is amazing.”

His wife explained to CNN at the family home near Nîmes, in the south of France, where Bernadette cares for him that ever since his coma they had been buying presents like a T-shirt or Jumper, because she dresses him in his bed and he changes clothes every day.

“I will buy things so that he can have a nice room, such as pretty sheets, or some scent. He used to wear Paco Rabanne but now I buy Sauvage by Dior.”

Adams and his wife, Bernadette were married in April 1969 and had two sons, Laurent (born 1969) and Frédéric (1976).
