2023 is a  year to remember, it was filled with monumental moments and unexpected outcomes across all sports. From history-making achievements to shocking upsets, the last 12 months kept fans on the edge of their seats.

The year 2023 was epic in sports. It was filled with records, farewells from legends, new winners, and plenty of controversy.  

From  Spain’s drama-filled victory to Fury vs Ngannou fights,  there was triumph and trouble at every turn. Long waits for trophies ended as Manchester City and Barcelona claimed glory again, while Real Madrid and Sevilla dominated as usual.

Manchester City’s Domestic Treble and first European trophy 

In club football, several long-awaited droughts were finally broken. Premier League giants Manchester City completed a domestic treble, winning the English league title, FA Cup, and Champions League to cement their status as England’s top club. It marked their first ever European Cup and first continental trophy in over 50 years.

Barcelona claims first League title since Messi’s departure 

 Spanish side Barcelona claimed their first La Liga title since the departure of Lionel Messi in 2021, re-establishing themselves as Spain’s premier club.

Sevilla reigns again in Europa League

Elsewhere in Europe, a familiar face returned to the winner’s circle as Sevilla won their record-breaking 7th UEFA Europa League trophy.

They defeated Mourinho’s team Roma in the final. 

Osimhen leads Napoli to their first League title since Maradona 

Serie A also saw the end of a long dry spell with Napoli winning their first Scudetto since the days of Diego Maradona in 1990. The success was powered by top scorer Victor Osimhen, who has drawn comparisons to Maradona himself.

Spain makes history claiming the Women’s World Cup 

On the international stage, the world of women’s football received top billing as Australia and New Zealand hosted the historic 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The tournament’s expanded 32-team format replicated the men’s event for the first time. 

However, Spain emerged victorious in controversial fashion, winning their maiden title but also becoming mixed in major scandal. 

The championship was marred by the Rubiales affair, where senior members of the Spanish FA were found to be embroiled in a match-fixing plot. Nevertheless, Spain still became just the second nation after Germany to hold both the men’s and women’s World Cup.

World record holder Tobi Amusan dethroned as World Champion in Budapest

The world of track and field saw a shocking upset at the 2023 World Championships. Defending world champion and world record holder Tobi Amusan was surprisingly dethroned, finishing 6th in the 100m hurdles final won by Danielle Williams of Jamaica. Amusan was also embroiled in doping allegations, which were strongly denied. 

Real Madrid dominates Club World cup again

In club football’s global tournament, Real Madrid continued their dominance by winning a record-extending 5th FIFA Club World Cup title. They defeated Egyptian side Al Ahly 4-1 in the semis before overcoming Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia 5-3 in a goal fest final. Chelsea were unable to defend their 2021 crown after failing to qualify.

Messi and Ronaldo exit Europe 

Two of football’s biggest superstars, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, made shocking exits from European football in 2023. Ronaldo blazed the trail, making a shock move to Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr in January after departing Manchester United. 

He paved the way for Messi to follow later in the year, with the Argentine icon joining David Beckham’s MLS club Inter Miami as a free agent after leaving PSG. Their moves seem to have kickstarted the sudden move of stars out of  Europe.

Fury beat Ngannou by controversial decision despite MMA Star’s knockdown

Boxing heavyweight champion Tyson Fury took on MMA fighter Francis Ngannou in a crossover bout. Despite being the underdog, Ngannou nearly pulled off a massive upset by flooring Fury in the 4th round. However, Fury controversially edged out the win on a split decision to remain undefeated. The result was hotly contested, leaving many feeling Ngannou deserved the victory. 

South Africa reigns again at Rugby World Cup

In rugby, South Africa strengthened their grip on World Cup bragging rights, retaining their title at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France. They defeated rivals New Zealand in a tense final to claim an unprecedented 4th world championship. The Springboks also made history as the first team to ever lose a match in pool play but still go on to win the tournament, underlining their pedigree as rugby’s supreme knockout competitors.

Conclusion 

Overall, 2023 was filled with accomplished champions defending their thrones as well as promising new challengers staking their claim amongst the stars.

But it was also a year tarnished by allegations of match-fixing and doping plots. As the sporting world looks ahead to 2024, integrity and ethics will need to be at the forefront to preserve the spirit of fair play. 

But one thing is for certain – fans can expect another year of edge-of-your-seat excitement as old rivals square off once more and new contenders rise up in pursuit of glory.
