The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said it is investigating the circumstances that led to the liking of a post targeting the candidacy of one of the presidential candidates in the forthcoming general elections.
Nigeria’s electoral umpire made this known in a series of tweets on Wednesday, February 9, which Ikeja Bird sighted.
INEC said it is independent and will not drive bias into the election, adding that its neutrality is unquestionable.
Recall that INEC was dragged into the court of online criticism after a post castigating Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), was liked by the Twitter account of the commission.
Many Nigerians, mostly Obi’s supporters, accused INEC of bias with less than three weeks to the presidential and national assembly election, forcing the electoral body to issue a statement.
“The attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been drawn to a post on its Twitter handle, liking a post relating to one of the 18 Presidential candidates. The Commission is an independent electoral body and does not have preference for any candidate or political party.
”The Commission assures all Nigerians of its neutrality and will conduct a general election that is free and fair to all. The allegiance of the Commission is to the people of Nigeria.
“In the meantime, the Commission is investigating the circumstances that led to the liking of the said post and will take appropriate disciplinary actions if an infraction is established,” INEC said.
