Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title after defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time in a dramatic final at the Puskás Arena in Budapest.

The result ended Arsenal’s hopes of winning a first-ever Champions League crown and handed the French champions back-to-back European titles.

Arsenal made the brighter start and took the lead just six minutes into the match. Kai Havertz capitalised on a defensive error to put the Premier League champions ahead, sparking celebrations among the club’s supporters.

The North London side maintained their advantage for much of the first half, frustrating PSG with a disciplined defensive display despite the French side enjoying more possession.

PSG found their way back into the contest in the second half after being awarded a penalty when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was brought down inside the box. Ousmane Dembélé converted from the spot, sending goalkeeper David Raya the wrong way to level the scores at 1-1.

The equaliser shifted momentum in PSG’s favour as they pushed for a winner, while Arsenal remained resolute at the back. However, neither side could find a breakthrough during regulation time, forcing the match into extra time.

Despite several attacking moves from both teams, the deadlock remained unbroken after 120 minutes, leaving the Champions League trophy to be decided through a penalty shootout.

PSG held their nerve from the spot, converting four of their penalties. Arsenal managed three.

The turning point came when Eberechi Eze failed to convert his effort for Arsenal. Although Raya produced a crucial save to keep his side in contention, Arsenal’s hopes were ultimately dashed when Gabriel Magalhães sent his penalty over the crossbar.

The miss handed PSG victory and sparked wild celebrations among the French club’s players and supporters.

The triumph marks another milestone for manager Luis Enrique, whose side has now established itself as one of Europe’s dominant forces. PSG’s successful title defence places them among a select group of clubs to have retained the Champions League trophy in the modern era.

For Arsenal, the defeat brings disappointment after what has otherwise been a remarkable season. Having ended their long wait for a Premier League title, Mikel Arteta’s side had hoped to complete a historic domestic and European double.

While the Champions League trophy slipped from their grasp, Arsenal’s run to the final underlined the progress made by the club in recent seasons and reaffirmed their status among Europe’s elite teams.

As PSG celebrate another European triumph, attention will now turn to next season, whether they can continue their dominance on the continent.

For Arsenal, the focus shifts to building on a campaign that delivered domestic success but ended in heartbreak on Europe’s biggest stage.
