The Lagos State Government has commenced the removal of illegal structures within the Trade Fair Complex in the Ojo area, following multiple violations of the state’s physical planning and urban development laws. The enforcement exercise targets developments that have failed to obtain statutory building permits and requisite approvals from relevant state agencies.

The action is part of the ongoing effort by the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development to restore order and ensure compliance with established urban planning standards across the state.

Top government officials were Present at the site to supervise the enforcement, reflecting the seriousness of the administration’s commitment to urban regulation.

The illegal structures, many of which were built without official planning approvals were marked for demolition after repeated warnings and notices were disregarded by developers and occupants. The government emphasized that the absence of building permits poses a significant threat to public safety, environmental sustainability, and urban infrastructure.

Speaking during the enforcement operation, a senior official reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy toward illegal development:

“No structure should be erected in Lagos without due process. We have repeatedly warned against unlawful developments, especially those that encroach on public infrastructure, drainage channels, and road setbacks. The consequences of such violations are evident in the flooding, traffic congestion, and general urban disorder that residents frequently endure.”

The operation also served as a stern reminder to property developers and residents across the state about the importance of securing proper building permits before commencing construction. Failure to do so, officials warned, will result in sanctions, including removal of structures and potential prosecution.

Residents and traders in the Trade Fair area expressed mixed reactions. While some decried the timing of the demolition, others acknowledged the need for regulatory enforcement, especially in a city as densely populated and commercially active as Lagos.

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving urban planning standards, ensuring environmental protection, and safeguarding the lives and properties of its citizens through sustained regulatory enforcement.
